As many of our cancer travel insurance customer may be aware, this week, 10th to 16th June is Cervical Screening Awareness Week (CSAW). Shockingly 20% of women in the UK still do not attend their cervical screening (smear test) and therefore the awareness week will remind these women of the importance of this test and how it can help prevent cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer can be a completely preventable disease, but in order to catch the condition before it turns to cancer women must attend their smear test appointments, these tests can identify abnormal cells before they become cancerous. Treatment to remove pre cancerous cells is normally straight forward and can be completed under a local anaesthetic.
One of the main keys to treating all cancers not just cervical cancer is early diagnosis, the earlier the cancer is discovered the more successful the treatment will be, which is why these cancer awareness weeks are so important. They make people aware of symptoms to look out for and encourage them not to skip the screenings they are offered. Theses screenings, be it smear tests, mammograms etc can seem like a inconvenience, but they could very well save your life so don’t put them off, and encourage your friends not to put them off either
