Beware of the Excess on your Holiday Hire Car

The cost of car hire for your annual holiday always seems very reasonable, that is until they start to talk to you about the amount extras.  Standard third-party cover is included in the basic rental price quoted.  However, simple holiday mishaps, for example chipped windscreens, scratched bumpers, damaged tyres, lost leys etc., can attract penalties in the form of Excesses of over £500, but you can buy an excess waiver policy, which would mean you wouldn’t have to pay the excess charges.  These policies are usually sold to you at the car hire desk when you pick up your car, but be warned these policies can double your car hire costs.  You can purchase this type of excess waiver policy in the UK before you travel and they do tend to be a lot more value for money, so it is always worth looking into these things before you leave the country.

Whenever travelling abroad it is also advisable to make sure you have a current travel insurance policy that is suitable for your needs, this policy will not cover your excess fees on a car hire contract, but will cover such things as cancellation, delayed departure, emergency medical treatment.  Should you have a medical condition it is important you buy holiday insurance for pre existing medical conditions, ensuring you declare all your medical conditions and any medication to the travel insurance with pre existing medical conditions provider, failure to fully declare your medical conditions could result in a claim being declined.
How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Holiday Car Hire:
·         Look into excess insurance cover before you leave the country
·         Take both parts of your driving licence, photo card and paper counterpart
·         Make sure you check for any damage on the car before you drive away
·         Book any extras such as baby seat, roof rack etc., before your leave on holiday
·         Make sure you return the car on time
