Travelling with Bipolar Disorder: What you need to know.

While the thought of a holiday can be exciting, planning a trip may come with extra considerations if you have a bipolar disorder diagnosis – one of the biggest being travel insurance. Finding coverage that takes bipolar disorder into account can sometimes feel complicated.

With the right preparation, people with bipolar disorder travel successfully and enjoy their trips.
At Insurancewith, we know that mental health matters. That’s why we use our in-house medical risk rating system, Protectif, to gain a clear understanding of your unique situation. By considering your treatments, lifestyle, and how your bipolar disorder may affect your day-to-day life., we consider cover, based on your individual circumstances.

Cover, terms, and premiums will vary depending on individual circumstances and medical history.
For more information on mental health and travel, see our complete guide to looking after your mental health while travelling.

Do you need to declare bipolar disorder for Travel Insurance?

Yes, it is important to declare all pre-existing medical conditions – including bipolar disorder when taking out travel insurance. This includes any treatments, care plans, or medications recommended by your GP or mental health specialist. Failure to disclose a pre-existing condition may affect the validity of your policy or any subsequent claims.

Our travel insurance policies include a range of features designed to give you peace of mind:

• Discounts for couples, families, and single-parent families
• Up to £5,000 cancellation cover
• 24/7 emergency medical assistance team
• No upper age limit for single trip policies (depending on the destination and trip duration)
• Subject to policy terms, conditions, and exclusions. Please refer to your policy wording for full details. Policy wordings available once you take out a travel insurance quote.

How travel may affect bipolar disorder symptoms

The following is general information only; always consult your GP or specialist for personalised medical advice before travelling.

Travelling abroad could impact bipolar disorder in a number of ways. Therefore being aware of potential triggers, and what you could do to manage them, can help you plan ahead and manage your wellbeing while away:

• Destinations and time differences can affect bipolar symptoms, but planning ahead—such as adjusting sleep routines and staying hydrated in hot weather—can help you stay balanced.
• Changes to sleep can be a trigger, so keeping a consistent routine where possible and using tools like eye masks or relaxation techniques can support better rest.
• Sunshine can boost mood, and by pacing activities and building in downtime, you can enjoy the benefits while keeping energy levels stable.
• Higher temperatures can influence mood, so staying cool, taking breaks, and avoiding peak heat can help you manage symptoms comfortably while travelling.

Managing bipolar medication while abroad

Government guidelines recommend that you carry a letter from your GP or psychiatrist with all important information when travelling abroad.
• Ask your GP or psychiatrist whether any of your medications contain any controlled substances. If so, it is strongly advised that you check the embassy of your destination to see what you can or cannot take.
• Many countries allow visitors to take up to a 30-day supply of medication. However, if you need a larger supply, you may need to see a local doctor for a new prescription or get a free and valid personal export licence from the Home Office.
• Pack medication in your hand luggage in case your hold baggage gets lost or delayed, even if it is in liquid or gel form.
• Keep all medication in its original pharmacy packaging to simplify it for security and customs inspections.
